Planning for 2014
We’re busy planning for 2014 and it got us thinking about upcoming events. From the Winter Olympics to the World Cup in Brazil, it’s going to be a sports focused year. And there’s lots to get marketeers thinking as well; find out the marketing trends that could impact on your business with the Forbes list of 14 critical brand and marketing trends for 2014.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Rubix Cube, the Liberty Science Centre is hosting an exhibition entitled Beyond Rubik’s Cube. In March, People magazine celebrates 40 years in business and teen girls’ magazine Jackie will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
In the US, it’s 50 years since the US TV quiz show Jeopardy! was first broadcast on NBC and September will see celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of The Star Spangled Banner. In film, October 2014 will mark 50 years since My Fair Lady premiered in New York.
Closer to home, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Dubliners by James Joyce and 50 years since the death of Irish playwright, novelist, poet and short story writer, Brendan Behan. The Feile Brian Boru will mark the 1,000th year anniversary of the death of Brian Boru and 2014 also marks the 10th anniversary of the smoking ban in Ireland (a world first, remember).
And in the film world, we’re very excited at the prospect of the LEGO movie, due for release early next year. Here’s a little clip of what to expect…
TBEX Europe 2013
The world’s travel bloggers, writers, and new media content creators will be descending on Dublin this Thursday and Friday for TBEX Europe 2013. To celebrate the occasion, Le Cool has created a once-off issue.
And to give them a flavour of what to expect, this video from The Gathering was shown to all TBEX North American attendees in May
Tifamade
We love this from Tifamade – sandwiches and cakes on two wheels. Tiffany Iung started delivering sandwiches in and around Paris in 2010 when she was looking for a way to combine her two passions: feeding people and riding her bike.
It’s homemade food with ingredients carefully chosen from the farmer’s market, all wrapped up in ecological packaging. The sandwiches and cakes are presented in a lovely old suitcase, which is very cute indeed.
For a cool and quirky alternative closer to home, we love The Cake Cafe in Dublin
The Gathering at Glenveagh Castle
The Gathering at Glenveagh Castle took place yesterday – a family fun day complete with treasure hunt, face painting, kids crafts and delicious home baking and cakes from the Tearoom.
For those of you not familiar with Donegal, or for those who haven’t visited the place in a while, Glenveagh Castle is a must-see, (check out the reviews on TripAdvisor). It’s described as a remote and hauntingly beautiful wilderness in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains and one of the best ways to experience its beauty is to walk The Bridle Path, pictured below. Bike rentals are also a good option and local company Grassroutes has everything you need to make it happen.
Nothing to See Here
Oliver Jeffers of The Gruffalo fame currently has an exhibition in London entitled Nothing to See Here. Showing at Lazarides Rathbone, the series of work explores themes of censorship and ignorance, the notion that knowledge is power.
The Panama Legacy – Smythson
To coincide with the launch of the Panama leather goods collection, Smythson has collaborated with young British artist Quentin Jones.
We paid a visit to the recently refurbished flagship store on Bond Street to check out the exhibition, which consists of a series of ten artworks inspired by the Panama diary. Each of the pieces focuses on an individual high profile figure, from past or present, exploring their relationship with their Panama diary or book. The list of subjects includes Sigmund Freud, Katharine Hepburn, Bryan Ferry, Kylie Minogue and Dita Von Teese.
In this article in AnOther, Jones talks about her inspiration for creating the collection of artworks
London Design Festival
A trip to London never fails to inspire and our visit last weekend was no exception. There was lots going on as part of London Design Festival with a programme of over 300 events and exhibitions across the design spectrum.
In a unique collaboration, Thornback and Peel teamed up with Winter’s Moon to show a range of vintage inspired homewares and mid-century furniture upholstered with their hand-printed fabrics – we love this vintage Ercol day bed upholstered in Pear ivory linen.
As part of the festival, (and for the first time), Karl Lagerfeld carried out an original photographic project for a furniture brand, Cassina
Once again, the V&A was the focal point for all matters festival related, with an exciting array of displays, installations, talks and workshops throughout the museum. Colonial Common, a pop-up bar at The Old Shoreditch Station, had lots of tastings, live music, and food from the likes of Beard to Tail and Anna Mae’s.
And located right outside the Tate Modern, this year’s landmark project, Endless Stair, remains open to the public until October 10th.
Donegal Lighthouse Makes Top Ten
It’s great to see Donegal’s Fanad Lighthouse on this list of the world’s most beautiful lighthouses. We’re excited by its upcoming renovation and plans for a coffee and craft shop and look forward to the day that this impressive structure is open to the public. It’s exactly the kind of development required to boost tourism in the county.
